I love stories – always have. I enjoy listening to people’s lived experiences, learning how they mold personal goals and habits, and building upon them in making a health promotion plan.
I believe our role as a primary care doctor is to thoughtfully ask and listen first. Patient’s responses are the tinder to the personalizing goals and setting actionable next steps. And frankly, showing we want to really hear what someone’s saying earns a measure of trust that makes it more likely we’ll be heard in return.
I try my best to ‘practice what’s preached,’ and find I’m more confident with my recommendations when I can draw/share from my own experiences with making/breaking/maintaining healthy habits. More recently, our family is cooking more and trying to keep up with a dinnertime ritual of sharing something we’re thankful for every day.
